Born and raised
in Haverhill
I had the pleasure of growing
up in Riverside with my parents and big brother Jim, as part
of a large boisterous Greek family, that on my father's side
was here for 3 generations and that cared deeply about Haverhill.
I attended the Crowell and Nettle schools. I played in the Riverside-Bradford
Baseball League, hung out at Riverside playground during summers
and played on Nettle's championship basketball team when I was
in the eighth grade. Hoops at the Boy's Club was always a highlight.
Later at HHS I was a National Honor Society student and played
on the Freshman Football team, as well as Freshman, JV and Varsity
basketball. I graduated from Haverhill High School in 1977 as
a member of the National Honor Society. I continued my education
and received my Bachelor of Science (Magna Cum Laude) in Electrical
Engineering from Merrimack College (1981).
As a Father
and Husband
Heidi Lang and I met in the political
arena in 1993 when I was a first-time candidate for City Council.
While we grew up in the same neighborhood, our paths had not
crossed since High School. Four years later we married. We cherish
raising our two children, Grace and John, who are seven and nine
years old, respectively. They both attend Golden Hill School.
A well-rounded education and happy childhood are our priorities
for them. Grace and John look up to their older sister Chelsea,
a graduate of HHS, now living in Florida.
As a Community
Leader
I was an active and effective
City Council President and City Councilor for ten years. Fairness,
honesty and taking responsibility was my philosophy then as it
is now. The record will show that I kept to this standard. As
a Councilor, I accepted responsibility for my decisions and challenged
the opposition appropriately. I was also innovative, always pushing
to take Haverhill to the next level. I was responsive to all
of Haverhill's citizens as I tried to base my votes and support
on the solutions that were the best for the City as a whole.
I also founded Danny's Mentoring and Tutoring program in 1994,
which served Haverhill's youth for almost 15 years. I am currently
the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Hillview Montessori
Charter School in Haverhill.
As a Professional
Manager and Engineer
During my 28 year career I have
been fortunate to manage and conduct research and development,
as well as engage in marketing for highly respected engineering
corporations on the forefront of technology, such as the MITRE
Corporation and Lucent Technology/Bell Labs. Additionally, I
have been involved with Internet start-ups. I have had the privilege
to visit customers and partners from Iceland, Spain and Norway
to Somalia and Saudi Arabia. It was both exciting and fulfilling
to spend extended trips in each of these countries with different
cultures and varying importance on the world stage.
